Overview
After submitting an Express Entry application
After submission, IRCC first checks whether the electronic permanent residence application is complete. It then assesses program eligibility, the CRS score relied on for the invitation and admissibility, including medical, criminality and security screening.
Completeness comes before the merits
IRCC checks whether required forms, fees and documents were provided. An incomplete application can be rejected and processing fees refunded without a full eligibility decision.
Keep the submission confirmation and exact filed package. If IRCC asks for an item already supplied, respond with the document and identify where it appeared rather than assuming the officer will find it.
Biometrics have a short response period
Permanent residence applicants between 14 and 79 generally give biometrics for each application, even if previous biometrics remain valid. IRCC sends an instruction letter after confirming the application is complete.
The current instruction period is 30 days from the letter. Pay the biometrics fee with the application where required, monitor the account and book promptly.
IRCC verifies eligibility and admissibility
An officer checks whether the applicant met the invitation program and had enough CRS points for the round. Employment, education, language, funds and nomination evidence can be verified with issuing organizations.
Medical examinations, police certificates and background checks inform admissibility. IRCC may request documents, clarification or procedural-fairness submissions if concerns arise.
Report material changes during processing
Use IRCC’s web form or account process to report changes such as marriage, divorce, a new child, change of address or passport and other facts the Department requires. Do not wait until approval if family composition changed.
A temporary resident in Canada must maintain separate work, study or visitor status. A submitted Express Entry application does not automatically authorize continued work; eligible applicants may apply separately for a bridging open work permit.
Approval is followed by confirmation of status
IRCC communicates the decision through the secure account. Approved applicants follow the instructions for permanent residence confirmation, which differ depending on whether the person is inside or outside Canada.
Check names, dates of birth and family details on confirmation documents immediately. Retain the confirmation of permanent residence, since it remains an important record after the PR card is issued.

When to get legal advice
Respond carefully when IRCC raises a new concern.
A document request may be routine; a procedural-fairness letter signals that information could lead to refusal. Identify the issue and deadline before responding, especially where IRCC questions employment, funds, family status or admissibility.
IRCC alleges the score or program requirement was not met
A procedural-fairness deadline is running
The employer or document issuer cannot verify a record
Marriage, separation or a child was not reported promptly
A focused question may only need 15 minutes.
Use the time to identify the issue, any immediate risk and the next sensible step. If the matter needs more work, the lawyer can explain the proposed scope before you decide whether to proceed.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about after submitting an express entry application
Do previous biometrics cover an Express Entry PR application?
IRCC currently states that permanent residence applicants aged 14 to 79 must give biometrics for every PR application, even if earlier biometrics are still valid.
Can I work in Canada because my Express Entry application was submitted?
No. The PR application does not itself authorize work. Some applicants can make a separate application for a bridging open work permit if they meet its requirements.
