Confirmation of Permanent Residence
A Confirmation of Permanent Residence records approval and is used to complete or prove permanent-resident status. A person outside Canada generally completes the process at a port of entry; a person inside Canada may receive e-COPR after virtual confirmation.
Approval does not always mean status is complete
A COPR issued before arrival shows approval, but the person must complete the required landing or confirmation step before becoming a permanent resident.Source [1]
A person outside Canada must travel and present the COPR before the applicable validity date. A person confirmed inside Canada receives an e-COPR showing the date status began.
Do not use the approval date, document issue date and date of becoming a PR interchangeably.
Check every material detail
Compare the name, date of birth, passport information, immigration category, destination and conditions with the application and identity documents. Follow the amendment process if the record is wrong.
A handwritten or informal correction is not a substitute for the official process.
Use the document while waiting for the PR card
A completed COPR or e-COPR can prove status in Canada for services such as a Social Insurance Number. Keep both digital and secure paper copies.
Commercial carriers normally require a valid PR card or permanent resident travel document for return travel; the COPR alone should not be assumed to solve boarding.
Keep the COPR permanently
The document can later support a first-card issue, an amendment, a citizenship application or proof of the original landing details. It should not be discarded after the card arrives.
Store it separately from the passport and card so one loss does not remove every status record.
