Overview

Applying for Canadian citizenship

A citizenship application is assessed on the facts as of its signing date. Eligibility, physical presence, tax answers, language proof and prohibitions should all be checked before the fee is paid and the application is submitted.

Confirm the eligibility date

Run the official calculator with a buffer and make sure the applicant remains a permanent resident. Review tax years, age-based language and test requirements and any criminal or immigration proceeding.

Resolve discrepancies before choosing the signing date.

Complete the personal history consistently

List addresses, employment, education, travel and immigration status for every requested period without unexplained gaps. Passport records and the presence calculation should agree.

Disclose names, citizenships and prior applications exactly as asked.

Attach category-specific evidence

Provide identity documents, photographs, language proof and the calculator result using current instructions. Crown servants, waiver applicants and people with unusual status histories need additional records.

Do not upload irrelevant personal data merely to make the file larger.

Sign, pay and preserve the filing

Use the same date throughout, pay the current fee and submit through the eligible online or paper route. Keep the complete package, receipt and transmission confirmation.

Report later address, passport, family or criminal changes when required and monitor every IRCC message.
