After you apply for permanent residence

Submitting a PR application begins a review process. Keep the complete filed record, distinguish the submission confirmation from the acknowledgement of receipt and monitor the account or tool IRCC assigns to the application.

Keep proof of exactly what was submitted

Save every form, uploaded file, payment receipt, submission screen and delivery confirmation. The later question is often not what the applicant intended to send, but what the government record contains.

A confirmation that an online application was transmitted is not necessarily an acknowledgement that the application passed the completeness review.

Use the status tool that matches the application

An acknowledgement of receipt usually provides the application number needed for status tools. Read account messages and the next-steps area, not only the broad status label.

Processing-time estimates are not promises for an individual file.

Respond to requests through the specified channel

IRCC may request biometrics, medical information, police certificates, passports, updated forms or other evidence. Record the deadline and follow the upload or response instructions in the message.

If unsolicited information must be provided, use the route IRCC identifies, commonly the web form, and keep the confirmation.

Maintain temporary status separately

A pending PR application does not automatically authorize a person to remain, work or study in Canada. Temporary status and work authorization need their own analysis and applications.

Travel can affect an in-Canada process or the ability to return, so check the particular route before leaving.
