What happens after a permanent residence application

After submission, IRCC checks completeness, eligibility and admissibility. Applicants must monitor the correct account, meet request deadlines and report material changes until permanent residence is confirmed.

Save the filed record and acknowledgment

Keep the forms, uploads, fee receipt and submission confirmation. An acknowledgment of receipt can arrive later and may be necessary for a status tracker or certain work-permit categories.

Processing-time tools are estimates based on other files, not a deadline for an individual decision.

Watch every communication channel

Check the secure account, PR portal, email and mail address used for the application. IRCC can request biometrics, medicals, police records, updated forms or clarification.

Calendar the deadline from the letter and keep proof of the response. Use the web form if technical or document-obtaining problems arise.

Report changes before finalization

Notify IRCC about marriage, divorce, separation, birth, adoption, death and changes to address or passport through the stated process. Some economic applicants must also report employment, nomination or destination changes.

Adding a family member can create new fees, forms, medicals and background checks. Failing to report can place both status and future sponsorship at risk.

Temporary status remains separate

A pending PR application does not automatically extend visitor, student or worker status. Apply for an extension or eligible bridging permit before current authorization expires.

After approval, follow the instructions for electronic or in-person confirmation. Check the confirmation of permanent residence carefully and keep it permanently.
