Overview

Extending a Canadian work permit

Apply before the current permit expires. A timely in-Canada application can maintain temporary status and may permit continued work under the existing conditions while IRCC decides.

Start before the last month

IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before expiry. Employer-specific extensions may require a new LMIA or Employer Portal offer, while an open permit needs continued category eligibility.

Renew passports early because IRCC cannot issue beyond passport validity.

Maintained status preserves the old conditions

If an eligible work-permit application is submitted before expiry and the worker stays in Canada, work may continue under the original conditions. A closed-permit holder keeps the same employer, job and location; an open holder retains open conditions.

Applying for a visitor record or study permit instead does not continue work after the original permit expires.

Travel can change the practical result

A person who leaves Canada may lose the ability to work on maintained status upon return until the new permit is approved, even if allowed to enter as a visitor.

Check visa or eTA validity separately from the permit.

Keep proof of timely submission

Save the online confirmation, fee receipt and application. IRCC’s extension letter can help show an employer that work continues under the old conditions.

Provincial health cards, licences and SIN records may expire while status is maintained even though work can continue.
