Police certificates for immigration
Police-certificate requirements depend on the immigration program, age, countries of residence and the timing of each stay. Use IRCC’s country-specific instructions because the issuing authority and process differ.
Map residence history before ordering
Many PR applications require certificates for adult applicants from countries where they lived for six consecutive months or more during the relevant period. Express Entry uses the last ten years and generally starts at age 18.
Short trips do not necessarily break a continuous stay. Build exact dates from passports, addresses and employment records.
Current and former countries use different timing
For Express Entry, a certificate from the current country of residence must generally be issued no more than six months before submission and remain unexpired. For another country, it should be issued after the last qualifying stay there.
IRCC can still request a new certificate. Follow the checklist for the specific immigration class.
Some countries require an IRCC letter
Where the country issues a certificate only after an official request, upload the explanation IRCC specifies in that document field. If the application passes completeness, IRCC can send instructions.
Apply early in countries with long processing. Keep receipts, tracking and correspondence showing diligent efforts.
Upload the right record
Express Entry asks for colour scans of original certificates. A local name-based search or private background check is not a substitute unless IRCC’s country instructions say so.
Disclose charges and convictions accurately even if a certificate is clear. Criminal inadmissibility is a separate legal assessment.
