Language requirements for Canadian immigration

Canada has no single immigration language score. Each economic program sets its own minimum and approved tests, while family sponsorship and protection routes generally use different eligibility criteria.

Use an immigration-approved test

Federal economic programs commonly accept CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core for English, and TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French. The exact accepted test belongs to the program.

Academic test versions, school instruction and workplace fluency do not replace a required immigration result.

CLB and NCLC translate the raw result

Canadian Language Benchmarks measure English and Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadien measure French. Convert speaking, listening, reading and writing separately using the responsible program’s chart.

A low score in one ability can fail a minimum even when the overall average appears strong.

The minimum changes by pathway and occupation

Express Entry program minimums range from CLB/NCLC 4 in some Federal Skilled Trades abilities to 7 in all abilities for Federal Skilled Worker. Canadian Experience Class depends on the job’s TEER.

Atlantic and community programs connect the minimum to the offered job or pilot. Citizenship uses separate age and evidence rules and is not an immigration-program language test.

Validity and higher scores both matter

Express Entry language results must be less than two years old at the application stage. Other programs specify their own validity rule.

A score above the minimum can improve CRS ranking or open French-category selection. Schedule a retest with enough time to receive and update results before expiry.
