Permanent residence after studying in Canada

Canadian graduation does not automatically lead to permanent residence. A graduate usually needs valid work authorization, qualifying experience and eligibility under Express Entry, a provincial program or another current pathway.

Check PGWP eligibility before choosing the program

Only graduates of eligible programs at eligible designated learning institutions can obtain a post-graduation work permit. Current field-of-study and language requirements can depend on the credential and application date.

A school’s DLI status alone does not make every program PGWP-eligible. Verify the exact program before paying tuition.

Protect the period after completion

A study permit generally stops being valid 90 days after program completion, even if a later date is printed. PGWP applications have their own filing period and status rules.

Eligible graduates who apply while holding a valid study permit may work full-time while the PGWP is processed if they met the off-campus work conditions. Keep the completion letter, transcript and submission confirmation.

Build experience that a PR program counts

Canadian Experience Class normally excludes work gained while a full-time student. Post-graduation paid work in NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 may count if authorized and performed while physically in Canada.

Provincial graduate streams can use education, job offers or local ties differently. Atlantic and community routes may also fit when their employer and destination rules are met.

Time tests create a planning deadline

A PGWP is generally issued once and may be shorter than expected because of program length or passport expiry. Calculate how long it will take to gain the required experience and obtain language results before the permit ends.

A PR profile or application does not itself extend work authorization. Consider a bridging permit only after the separate requirements are met.
