Overview

Preparing a Canadian résumé

A Canadian résumé normally emphasizes relevant accomplishments, skills and dates in a clear reverse-chronological or functional structure. It does not need a photograph, age, marital status or immigration story.

Target one role

Use the job description to select relevant experience and terminology while keeping titles and duties truthful. A generic career history forces the employer to guess the fit.

Put work authorization in a short line only when it answers a likely practical question.

Write evidence, not adjectives

Describe the action, scale and result: staff supervised, cost reduced, systems used or clients served. Convert unfamiliar organization names with a brief industry explanation.

Do not translate credentials into a Canadian licence you do not hold.

Remove unnecessary personal information

Omit photographs, birth date, religion, marital status, passport number and SIN. Provide city, phone, professional email and portfolio or LinkedIn link where relevant.

References can be supplied later with consent.

Make the document easy to screen

Use simple headings, consistent dates and readable type; complex columns can fail applicant-tracking systems. Proofread in the language required for the job.

Save a clean PDF unless the employer requests another format.
