Most applicants aged 18 through 54 take the citizenship test in English or French. The questions come from Discover Canada and cover rights, responsibilities, history, geography, government, laws, economy and symbols.
Study the official guide
Read Discover Canada rather than memorizing commercial question banks. Pay attention to democratic institutions, Indigenous peoples, regional history, military history and civic responsibilities.
IRCC offers the guide in accessible formats and as audio.
Follow the invitation
Most applicants receive an online invitation and a 30-day window. Identity is checked and webcam monitoring applies; do not obtain help or consult materials during the test.
Alternate formats can be arranged as accommodations.
Know the attempt rules
IRCC currently allows up to three attempts. Depending on results, the next step may be another test, an interview, a hearing or a ceremony invitation.
Missing the window without explanation can delay or jeopardize the application.
Prepare technology and identification
Use a supported device, reliable connection, quiet room and the identification listed in the invitation. Test the camera beforehand and contact IRCC promptly if a technical problem prevents completion.
Keep screenshots or records of a genuine system failure without recording test content.
