Overview

Extending a study permit

A student who applies for an extension before expiry can usually remain in Canada under maintained status while IRCC decides, but study and work rights depend on continuing to meet the old permit’s conditions.

Apply before the printed expiry date

IRCC recommends applying early enough to correct an incomplete filing. The application needs a current acceptance or enrolment record, finances and an explanation for the additional study period.

A passport expiry can limit the new permit, so renew it first when practical.

Understand maintained status precisely

A timely application generally lets the student remain and continue under the previous conditions while staying in Canada. Leaving Canada can affect the ability to resume study or work before approval.

Keep proof of the submission date and the prior permit for schools and employers.

Explain academic changes or delays

Provide transcripts and school records for failed courses, authorized leave, program transfers or a new completion date. IRCC assesses whether the student has actively pursued studies.

A long unexplained gap can raise both compliance and future PGWP concerns.

If the permit already expired

Maintained status is unavailable. Restoration may be possible within the prescribed period if the student remained eligible and did not continue unauthorized activity.

A restoration application does not normally authorize study or work while pending.
