Changing schools or programs

Changing post-secondary institutions is no longer merely an online account update. A student may need a new study permit and should confirm the transfer rules before leaving the current DLI.

Separate a program change from a DLI change

A different course at the same institution may be treated differently from moving to another DLI. A campus change can also matter when the campus has a different DLI listing.

Obtain the new acceptance letter and ask both schools to document dates and standing.

Check whether a new permit is required

IRCC’s current transfer rules specify when a student must apply for a new study permit before changing institutions and the limited situations in which study at the new DLI can begin while waiting.

Do not rely on advice that predates the rule change.

Protect the record between schools

Avoid an unauthorized gap and keep proof of completion, withdrawal, refunds and the new start date. Off-campus work is not allowed while a student is not studying unless a specific scheduled-break rule applies.

Update contact and institutional information exactly as IRCC instructs.

Recheck the post-graduation plan

The new program, institution, study length, field and delivery method may change PGWP eligibility or duration. Time spent in an ineligible program cannot necessarily be cured later.

Review the immigration consequences before paying a non-refundable deposit.
