Renewing a PR card

A permanent resident can apply to renew an expiring or expired PR card while physically in Canada. The application asks IRCC to verify identity, status and compliance with the residency obligation.

Apply at the appropriate time

IRCC generally invites renewal when a card is expired or will expire within nine months. A card remains valid until its printed date; applying does not extend the physical card.

The applicant must be in Canada when applying and should provide a Canadian mailing address.

Reconstruct the five-year travel record

List every absence accurately using passports, entry records, tickets, tax and employment documents. Dates on different records should reconcile.

If claiming credit abroad with a Canadian spouse, parent or business, provide evidence for every legal element rather than only the relationship or employment contract.

Meet photograph and identity specifications

Use current PR-card photo instructions and include required passport and status records. Incorrect image size, missing translations or gaps in personal history can lead to return or delay.

Save the submission and delivery confirmation.

Urgency is limited

IRCC may consider urgent processing for qualifying travel within its published criteria, but a ticket does not guarantee expedition. Include the full proof requested.

A person who leaves before receiving the card may need a PRTD abroad to board the return trip.
