Overview

Citizenship document checklist

The citizenship checklist establishes minimum filing documents; the applicant’s own travel, status or waiver history may require more. Every record should support the same identity and five-year chronology.

Use current forms and checklist

IRCC updates citizenship forms, document versions and online questions. Follow the package for the applicant’s age and category rather than reusing an older family member’s list.

A missing required item can cause the package to be returned.

Document identity and status

Provide the biographical pages of passports and travel documents covering the eligibility period, accepted personal identification and compliant photographs. Explain missing or unavailable passports.

A valid PR card is not mandatory if the person remains a PR.

Support presence, tax and language

Include the final physical-presence calculation and accepted language proof where age requires it. Tax information must accurately state whether filing was required and completed.

Keep backup travel, address and employment records in case IRCC later asks.

Handle translations and special evidence

Documents outside English or French need translations meeting IRCC rules. Name changes, Crown service, criminal history, waivers and prohibitions require their own records and explanations.

Index a complex submission so dates and exhibits can be found quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about citizenship document checklist

Is a valid PR card required?

No. Citizenship eligibility depends on PR status, not whether the physical card remains valid.

Should every travel receipt be submitted initially?

Not usually; provide required documents and retain supporting records for a later request.
